Im Gespräch mit Antea Markovic

From the TU directly to Hitachi Rail—what convinced you at the time? Was it the technological set-up, the corporate culture, or was there another reason why you said: This is where I want to code?”

Coming from TU, what really caught my attention wasn’t just the tech—it’s the whole vibe. The supportive corporate culture and the chance to explore different departments through rotation programs really stood out. You’re never stuck in one role; there’s always a new challenge waiting around the corner. And the offices? Think modern open spaces that feel more like creative hubs than traditional cubicles. It was this perfect mix of people, flexibility, and a great environment that made me say, “This is where I want to code!"

#WomenInTech is more than just a hashtag. How does Hitachi Rail support young developers and how inclusive do you find the tech teams? What would you say to other women wanting to enter this industry and especially Hitachi Rail?

At Hitachi Rail, inclusivity is a core principle. Our WomenInNetwork provides a supportive platform where women in tech can gather for events, lectures, and meaningful discussions. The culture in our tech teams is built on collaboration and respect, ensuring that every perspective is heard and valued. If you’re a woman considering a career in tech or looking into Hitachi Rail, I’d encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities, trust in your skills, and join a community that’s truly supportive.

Many of us want to make a difference: How do you see your impact as a software engineer at Hitachi Rail? What exciting projects are you currently working on and how do they contribute to the future of mobility?

As a software engineer on the ELEKTRA electronic interlocking system, I get to work on projects that keep rail travel safe and efficient. My current main focus is developing smart systems that alert worker crews well before a train approaches, so they can safely clear the area—it’s like having a high-tech safety net in place. Once the train passes, everything resets automatically, keeping disruptions to a minimum. It’s pretty exciting to be part of a team that not only enhances everyday safety but also contributes to a smoother, more reliable future in mobility.

The first job after graduating is often challenging. How was your start at Hitachi Rail? Are there mentoring or buddy programs for newbies and how were you integrated into the team?

My start at Hitachi Rail was genuinely welcoming—it felt like joining a team that had your back from day one. They paired me with an experienced developer as a mentor and also assigned a buddy with a similar background, so I had both guidance and a peer to navigate the early days. Plus, there are plenty of lectures and courses for newcomers, covering everything from general railway operations to the specifics of our technology. This thoughtful, structured approach made it easy to settle in and start making a real contribution.

What does your actual working day look like? And how do you manage your work-life balance when you have exciting projects?

At Hitachi Rail, my working day is all about flexibility and balance. I work in a hybrid model, so I can choose between our modern, collaborative office and the comfort of home when I need a change of scenery. We only need to hit our required hours by the end of the month, which lets me tailor my schedule to my own rhythm. Sure, there are moments when exciting projects or deadlines call for a little extra time, but those are balanced out by lighter days. It’s a smart setup that keeps work engaging while making sure I still have plenty of time for life outside the office.

Skills are the new gold: which skills are particularly in demand at Hitachi Rail and how can you develop them further? Does the company support learning paths or certifications?

Both technical and soft skills are in high demand in my work. I use languages like CHILL and PAMELA—tools that may not be mainstream but really drive home the point that it’s the underlying logic that counts. Alongside these, there’s a wide range of technologies at play, like Python and Java, keeping the learning curve fresh and exciting. Equally important are soft skills such as effective communication, teamwork, and adaptability, which are essential for thriving in a dynamic environment.
Continuous development is actively supported through a variety of courses and access to uLearn, plus there’s a strong push for certifications. I’ve earned the ISAQB for software architecture and a certification for working with low voltage systems, both of which were great milestones in my career. And on top of that, opportunities for language learning—I’ve even learned German—help broaden your horizons and enrich your overall experience.

Optimization is the big issue for our generation—between self-optimization and pressure to perform. How do you deal with this in your job and what culture does Hitachi Rail cultivate here?

There’s a strong focus on balancing high performance with well-being. The company really gets that we’re always trying to optimize everything, even ourselves, so they offer coaching and mentoring programs that go way beyond just technical training. These programs, along with regular check-ins and a flexible culture, help manage stress and prevent burnout. In essence, it’s like having a personal support system for your career, encouraging you to excel without sacrificing your health or sanity.
